New Rules of IPL 2023

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India. It is considered one of the most popular and prestigious cricket tournaments in the world. The IPL features teams representing various cities in India, and it attracts top international cricketers as well as domestic players.
Each year, the IPL season takes place during the months of March to May, although the specific dates may vary. The tournament follows a round-robin group stage format, where all teams play against each other, followed by playoffs and a final to determine the champion.

New Rules Highlights
  • As per the new rule of BCCI, Before handling their final playing 11 after the toss in IPL 2023, team captains might enter the pitch with two separate team sheets. The teams can choose their best 11 following the toss, depending on the outcome of the coin toss. But, up until last season, the captains were required to switch teams before the toss.
  • Decision Review System (DRS): The IPL might consider implementing the Decision Review System (DRS), which allows teams to challenge on-field umpire decisions. The system has been used successfully in international cricket and other T20 leagues.
  • Concussion Substitutes: The IPL might adopt the rule that allows teams to replace a player who has sustained a concussion during the match with a like-for-like substitute
  • Upon a catch dismissal, the incoming batsman will take the strike whether the batsmen have crossed or not, unless it’s the final ball of the over.
Basic knowledge about IPL

Player Auction: IPL teams participate in a player auction to acquire players for their respective teams. Each team has a certain budget to bid on players.

Squad Size: Each IPL team can have a maximum squad size of 25 players, including a combination of Indian and international players.

Match Format: Matches are typically played in a Twenty20 format, where each team faces a maximum of 20 overs.

Powerplay: The first six overs of each team's batting innings are called the powerplay. During this period, only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

Strategic Timeouts: Each team can take one strategic timeout per innings, which lasts for a maximum of two and a half minutes.

Player Substitutions: In case of injury, a substitute player can be brought in as a replacement during a match. However, the substitute player cannot bat, bowl, or keep wickets.

No-Balls and Free Hits: If a bowler bowls a no-ball (overstepping the crease), the following delivery is called a free hit. During a free hit, the batsman cannot be dismissed by any means except a run-out.

Umpire Decision Review System (DRS): Teams have the option to challenge the on-field umpire's decision by using the Decision Review System, which allows a limited number of reviews per innings.

Points System: Teams earn two points for a win, one point for a tie or no result, and zero points for a loss. The top four teams in the league standings qualify for the playoffs.

Playoffs: The IPL playoffs consist of Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final. The top two teams after the league stage play in Qualifier 1, with the winner directly advancing to the Final. The third and fourth-placed teams play in the Eliminator, and the winner of that match faces the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2. The winner of Qualifier 2 then progresses to the Final.
